Smoke billowing above trees from fires in NL

By: Elizabeth Pearcey

As many may know, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador faced devastating forest fires this summer. Through it all, we were powerfully reminded of God’s protection, His perfect plan, and His unwavering love and provision.

Is There a Message from God in the NL Fires?

When the fires began to spread across the province, many of us turned to prayer—asking God to protect residents, emergency workers, and to stop the flames. But one local pastor offered a deeper perspective. He said, “I’m not praying for the fires to stop, I’m praying for God’s will to be done through them.”

The fire came within 200 metres of our Atlantic Hope Women’s Centre and residence; but not a single flame touched our buildings. There was no damage – not even the smell of smoke. A clear line of protection had been drawn. God provided.

God’s provision

Within an hour of receiving the evacuation notice, our residents and staff had a safe place to go. A local church graciously opened their basement to us for two weeks. Hot meals were provided, and every need was met. Though we lost all the food at the Centre, within one day of returning, every fridge and freezer was restocked through generous donations. God’s love was visible in every detail.

A new client was scheduled to arrive the day after the evacuation. She suddenly had nowhere to go, but God made a way. She was safely sheltered until we were able to reopen and welcome her in.

Reflections

Here are just a few words from some of our clients during that time:

“Even in hard times, we can still have laughter and peace.”

“I’m so grateful for the TC Centre. I’ve seen God’s hedge of protection over us.”

“I was homeless and needed a place to go for hope and healing. Thank God the fire never reached the Centre.”

Thank you for supporting Teen Challenge Canada – not only through your financial giving but through your prayer. God is at the centre of this ministry, and we cannot do it without His forgiveness, grace, and love.
