Think of a time when you were going through a difficult trial. It might have been a job loss, the death of a loved one or perhaps an extended illness. During those moments when we feel down, isn’t it amazing what an encouraging word can do to lift us up? Hallmark understands this phenomenon and it’s why you’ll see a section of cards at your local store labelled “encouragement”.

When They Need it Most

During the time spent in the core program at one of our Teen Challenge Canada (TCC) centres, our clients are walking a challenging road. Their struggles with substance addiction led them to a desperate place and they are now looking for change.

Entering our 12-month program means leaving behind family, friends, and all that is familiar to pursue freedom from addiction. Our centres are peaceful settings that are removed from the typical triggers and temptations but that also means separation from loved ones and their “comfort zone”.

We know this can be tough for our clients, so we ask our sponsors and supporters to take advantage of our online encouragement notes!

Why Encouraging Notes Matter

Words of encouragement tell someone “You matter”. When clients arrive at our program, they are at a low point in their lives. Many have destroyed trust and broken relationships during the height of their addiction, and it takes time to restore those connections. Your words can let them know there is hope and their life matters.

Words of encouragement are a reminder we are not alone. A simple note can convey a heartfelt message to our clients that someone believes in them at a time they might be struggling to believe in themselves.

Words of encouragement can build momentum. Receiving an inspiring note not only makes our clients feel good, but it can motivate them to persevere. You never know when your words might take someone from nearly giving up to pushing through a difficult day.

Ethan* was in his 10th month of our core program. He had made huge strides toward recovery and was starting to see the fruit of his labour. However, at one particularly low point, Ethan felt he had reached a plateau and decided to leave the program. Despite the pleas of staff to stay the course, he was determined to leave.

His suitcase was packed, and he was waiting for a cab when one of our staff handed him an envelope. It had arrived that day from one of his sponsors. Out of curiosity, he opened it and scanned the card. Tears welled up in his eyes as he read about how this family prayed each night for him and they were proud of the progress he had made. They let him know they believe in him. Ethan slowly turned and picked up his suitcase and headed back to his room. He graduated from the Teen Challenge program and was a testament to how God can change someone if you allow Him to.

Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word!

How to Encourage Our Clients

We often request encouragement notes during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas as they can be particularly difficult times to be away from loved ones. However, we know that our clients need encouragement the whole year through!

If you have the gift of encouragement, Paul tells us to share it!

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us…. if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Romans 12:6,8

You may choose which TCC centre to send your note, so you may address it to a man or woman working towards recovery.

Thank you for supporting our clients in this meaningful way.

Your words matter!
